WHITE_LINE is pleased to announce it’s first official full length CD release, Variatons in White.  This edition comes in two parts, one released in August, and one in October. Each edition has commissioned soundworks by four internationally renowned artists, and includes artworks and imagery by US based Emilee Lord.
The theme for this series is based on the colour of white. White and whiteness are almost always associated with purity, clarity, serenity, blankness, emptiness. The colour of white reflects and absorbs light and colour, itself being comprised of many other colours. Anyone who has experienced a painting by the classic artist, Whistler, will know that his depictions of snow contain many hues and variations in colour, not simply white. A wall painted white will always reflect the colours of the day, sunlight, clouds, lighting etc, and is rarely, if ever experienced as a pure white surface.
The name, WHITE_LINE was inspired by an accumulation of ideas, and it was agreed that WHITE, and LINE, were perhaps two of the most fundamental visual statements of minimalism -  simplicity and purity. Across the span of the recordings, artists were commissioned to interpret the colour white in audible form, and in any combination of sound pieces totalling 8-10 minutes.
THIS EDITION WILL BE AVILABLE FROM OUR USUAL DISTRIBUTORS AND DIRECT FROM WHITE_LINE,

fourm – set.neutral – new works 2009

webcover-set-neutral

We are pleased to announce the imminent release of a set of exploratory works by FOURM, entitled set.neutral.  This release features companion works to those being released on Non Visual Objects later this year, entitled set.grey, and is the first part of a trilogy of sonic experiments that will find completion at the end of the year.

Housed in beautifully presented packaging and gatefold cover, set.neutral comprises an assemblage of highly reduced atmospheres, informed and influenced by mathematical algorithms from architecture, and the built form. Although directly related to the archisonics series, this work is to be seen an entirely different entity.

The work here consists of minute fragments, discrete auditory presences that barely penetrate a surface of silence. These presences will both fascinate and confound the auditor, and make for an interesting and engaging voyage into the hidden worlds of architectural form.

Richard Garet & Andy Graydon – Subtracted Released

webcover1

After a brief respite, WHITE_LINE Editions returns with the long awaited release of the  most recent sound works by Richard Garet and Andy Graydon. This is the final part of the first wave of Archisonics related releases, and both artists have contributed some of their most proficient works for WHITE_LINE.  Garet takes as his point of departure the tangled and sculptural elements of New York’s infamous landmark, “Pier D”,  and aurally transmutes this into a fascinating sound work. Graydon, long time friend and collaborator of Garet’s, takes examples from minimalist architectural guru, Mies Van Der Rohe, and explores the fragility and tensions manifested in his uber-minimal structures. As ever, this is a highly limited collector’s edition of 100 copies.

Recent editions have seen much success in the end of year “Best Of 2008″ listings on several influential sites, so it is with equal pride that we announce this very special release.

Heribert Friedl / Mise En Scene – 8cm release date

Release date: 15th December 2008

WHITE_LINE is honoured to release a unique recording from NVO maestro, Heribert Friedl. Accompanied with up and coming sound artist Mise En Scene, this is the penultimate release in the current series of Archisonics related recordings. Both artists take diametrically opposite approaches, with Friedl using time-based contact mic recordings of his studio walls, creating brittle, textural layerings, whilst Mise En Scene’s Shay Nassi interprets the architecture of his home territory in sound.

2009 sees WHITE_LINE EDITIONS entering a new phase, with the final Archisonics release coming from U.S. pairing, Richard Garet and Andy Graydon at the end of February 2009. WHITE_LINE will then be concentrating on  quarterly full length CD releases with wider distribution and slightly higher edition runs of 300 copies, in order to reach a wider audience.

Luigi Turra / Fourm – Meditation Space 8cm release date

It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce the upcoming release of Luigi Turra and Fourm on WHITE_LINE Editions. The official release date is scheduled for November 6th 2008.
Luigi Turra has been a mainstay of the Italian microsound scene for some time, with crucial releases on Small Voices and Koyuki Sound, his work has a subtle beauty, and Zen-like attention to micro-fine detailing. This release, Meditation Space is a continuation of WHITE_LINE’s “Archisonics” progamme of architecturally related sound works, inspired by the buillding of the same name, constructed by Tadao Ando, using fragments of building rubble from Hiroshima. This recording, sourced from field recordings around the building in Paris is Turra perhaps at his finest, as subtle frequencies cascade over the sounds of gently lapping water, and delicate organic washes. Housed in WHITE_LINE’s now instantly recognisable translucent envelope with art card featuring texts and images from Meditation Space, this 8cm release also features a brand new 11 minute sound work by Fourm.

Level OPALE due for release, Spekk, Japan

www.spekk.net

We have great pleasure in announcing that the brand new Level CD, OPALE is due for release in November, on the revered Japanese minimalist label, Spekk. With an initial release date exclusively in Japan some time in October. This long awaited collection sees Level on top form, and introduces some friends into the mix in the form of ambient drone maestro, Keith Berry, and Jazz pianist Linden Hale.

Opale is steeped in melancholy, and carries with it some of the moods and fragments of the critically acclaimed first release, Cycla. This time, the piano comes to the fore, shored up with organic fragments, and field recordings. This is sure to sell fast, so be sure to pre-order with Spekk, or contact Smallfish in the UK. This release will NOT be available from me directly. Check out the Spekk website frequently for news and updates.

FOURM Fraction [residual presences] 8cm, Released on Koyuki Sound

http://www.koyuki-sound.org/003.html

I am incredibly pleased and proud to announce the release of FRACTION on Koyuki Sound. This release is one of my first to fully explore all aspects of what I have dubbed “quietism”, as pioneered by Bernhard Gunther many years back. I have taken some of Gunther’s influence and applied it to field recordings taken at architectural locations whilst on a tour of Barcelona last year, then combined these with my own interventions. Koyuki is perhaps one of my favourite up and coming small labels, and I am certain, not to remain “small” for much longer. Their selection of artists, and rigorous analysis of many types of minimalism and quietism looks to set them apart from many of their contemporaries, so it is with extra joy that I am announcing the release of FRACTION here, a logical continuation of the Archisonics programme of recordings taking place this year.

FOURM & SHINKEI – Metrics/Hidamari – 8cm Released

The collaboration between FOURM and Koyuki Sound maestro, Shinkei is released on September 10th 2008. We first approached Shinkei way back in the Spring, as his exquisite sound renderings impressed us so much, that a piece was commissioned for this co-release on WHITE_LINE.  This release comes in a beautiful printed colour cover in translucent packaging.

We recognised in Shinkei, both an awesome ear for understated minimalism, and a great affinity for architecture. This release is a logical continuation of the Archisonics series, and we will be commissioning other artists to do similar work later in the year. Most impressive will be a collaboration with Italian sound artist, Luigi Turra  – watch this space for more news and updates. Our products are still available from the usual suppliers,(see posts below) or via Paypal: whitelineBN@aol.com

Metrics/Hidamari: £4.00 sterling + P&P
